Welcome to the Laurel County Sheriff's Office – serving the citizens of Laurel County since 1825. We are pledged working in partnership with our community to protect our citizens, preserve peace, and enforce laws professionally and in a courteous manner.

Our Mission Statement

The primary mission of the Laurel County Sheriff's Office is to provide a safe and secure environment for the residents and visitors of Laurel County through department programs and community policing efforts. This goal will only be accomplished through a mutually cooperative relationship between the Sheriff's Office, the other Laurel County law enforcement agencies, and the community it serves. By working together, we can maintain the peace, provide safety and security for our citizens, and reduce crime and/or the fear of crime.

Sheriff John Root


Laurel County Sheriff John Root was elected by the people in 2010 to serve as Laurel County Sheriff promising the citizens of Laurel County to wage “war on drugs”. His office continues to emphasize drug investigations, and all tips are investigated. Sheriff Root pledges to continue this fight. Additionally, Sheriff Root promised to keep the public informed about what his office is doing and does by publishing activities on a Laurel County Sheriff's Office Facebook page that reports arrests, weather conditions, road construction alerts, crime tips, and educational programs his office is involved with. Press releases are sent to media outlets in a timely manner reporting sheriff’s office activities. Sheriff Root's accomplishments include: continuing the “war on drugs”, a narcotics unit, a K-9 unit, an accident/crime scene investigation unit, a special response team with regional capabilities, a school resource officer and a public information officer. Additionally, the Laurel County Sheriff's Office has purchased new cruisers, new 9 mm duty weapons, 9 mm off duty weapons and rifles, new body armor, a state of the art total station used to reconstruct accidents and crime scenes, and computers in cruisers giving deputies direct 911 access. Deputies are fully equipped with the latest gear to enhance their safety and provide professional service to the citizens of Laurel County. Sheriff Root has 35 years law enforcement experience. John is a native of Laurel County and enjoys spending time with his family, farming, and hunting. John pledges to continue to be dedicated to providing Laurel Countian's with professional and courteous service from his office.

Command Staff

Major Robbie Grimes

Major Grimes started at LCSO in 2007. Grimes started as a Bailiff then went to Road Unit in 2011. Grimes has held the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain. Grimes is certified in Crisis Intervention and has a total of over 20 years in Law Enforcement.  

Captain Chris Edwards

Captain Edwards started at LCSO in 2017 as a Detective and has held the ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant. Edwards is certified in Accident Reconstruction, Hostage Negotiation, Crisis Intervention and Advanced Narcotics. Edwards has a total of over 25 years in Law Enforcement and is in charge of the LCSO Uniformed Division. 

Captain Richard Dalrymple

Captain Dalrymple started at LCSO in 1994 and has held the rank of Sergeant. Dalrymple is certified in Accident Reconstruction, Crisis Intervention, Hostage Negotiations and is the LCSO Range Instructor. Dalrymple served 20 years with LCSO on the DEA Task Force and in in charge of the LCSO Detective Division.

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo

Public Affairs Officer

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo provides current, timely information about the activities of the Laurel County Sheriff's Office through posts on our Facebook page, push notifications on our App and news releases to media outlets. In addition, he conducts educational programs on a variety of crime prevention topics. Deputy Acciardo has 45 years experience as a law enforcement officer including U.S. Army military police, Kentucky State Police, and the Laurel County Sheriff's office.
